The Best Stellenbosch Wineries to Visit in 2026

A thatched roof cape dutch house with saws windows and elaborate gables - The Main House of Boschendal, Stellenbosch

If you’re searching for the best Stellenbosch wineries, you’re probably feeling a little overwhelmed — and I get it. With well over 150 wine estates spread across the region, choosing where to go (and where to skip) can feel harder than the tasting itself.

I’ve been visiting Stellenbosch and the wider Cape Winelands for more than 20 years, travelling back several times a year through family ties and long stays in the Western Cape. Over that time, I’ve returned to the same estates again and again — not just for the wine, but for the overall experience: scenery, atmosphere, food, service, and how enjoyable a visit actually feels on the ground.

This 2026 guide to Stellenbosch wineries cuts through the noise. Rather than listing everything, I’ve curated the estates I genuinely recommend — from iconic names to quieter favourites — with practical tips, tasting prices, and clear guidance to help you plan a relaxed, memorable wine-tasting day (or three).

⚠️ If you’re planning a wider trip, see my Cape Town itinerary for 3, 5 or 7 days.

The Best Stellenbosch Wineries (By Area & Experience)

The Stellenbosch wineries listed below are grouped by location and driving flow, making it easy to plan a relaxed day without backtracking. Most of these estates sit along the Simonsberg, Pniel, and Helshoogte corridors, one of the most scenic and winery-dense areas of the region.

I’ve ordered the estates in the sequence you naturally encounter them when driving from the outer edge of Stellenbosch back towards town, starting near Babylonstoren and continuing through Pniel and Helshoogte. This allows you to combine iconic estates with smaller, lesser-known wineries in a single, easy route.

A handful of additional wineries are included further down the list for variety and contrast. Together, these estates offer what I believe is the best mix of wine quality, scenery, atmosphere, and overall experience in Stellenbosch.

Babylonstoren Wine Estate

For a ‘big’ experience you cannot go wrong with a day out at Babylonstoren. As one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms, this estate is exceptional.

What Makes Babylonstoren Special

You can easily spend hours wandering the gardens, stopping for lunch at one of the estate’s excellent eateries, or even staying overnight at the Farm Hotel. Babylonstoren consistently ranks as one of the most memorable Stellenbosch wineries — not just for the wine, but for the complete experience.

💡 Insider Tip – Babylonstoren has an outstanding farm shop. If you are staying in a self-catering accommodation, I recommend placing an order with them. Their online store offers next day delivery to Cape Town and its surrounding areas.

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

Adjacent to the wine cellar, the tasting room in Babylonstoren is a beautiful modern glass building set amongst the vines.

Wines I Recommend at Babylonstoren

🍷 Babel Red Blend – rich, polished, consistently excellent
🍸 Chenin Blanc – fresh, mineral and very well priced
🍾 Sprankel Cap Classique – one of the estate’s highlights

Tasting Prices

  • R180 – Seven wines from the Babylonstoren range | Candide Blend, Chenin Blanc, Mourvèdre Rosé, Viognier, Babel Blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz
  • R80 – Express tasting | Chenin Blanc, Mourvèdre Rosé & Babel Red
  • R70 – White Wine Tasting | Candide Blend, Chenin Blanc, Viognier
  • R95 Red Wine Tasting | Babel Blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz

From my experience tastings are very flexible and the staff working here are so knowledgeable. Opt for one of their divine platters to accompany the tasting.

A wine cellar tour is also possible for R550 per person. Advance booking is required.

Food & Restaurants

Babel follows a true farm-to-fork philosophy, serving seasonal dishes grown on the estate or sourced locally, set inside the beautifully restored old cow shed. Reservations are essential, especially in high season.

Letters of Straw spell out Babel, the signature restaurant of Babylonstoren, Stellenbosch.

A more casual alternative is The Greenhouse, which is easier to book and ideal for a relaxed lunch or coffee stop.

⚠️ Good to Know – There is a charge of R100 per person for entry to the Babylonstoren estate. You can download their Babylonstoren App to plan your visit in advance.

Noble Hill Wine Estate

Noble Hill is set in the foothills of the Simonsberg mountains, an area with over 300 years of winemaking history. The estate focuses on elegant, restrained wines with freshness and mineral structure rather than bold, high-alcohol styles.

The atmosphere here is informal and unpretentious. Tastings are easy to arrange, there’s no pressure to book ahead, and the team are happy to adapt the experience based on what you’re interested in trying.

🕘 Opening hours: Daily from 09:00 to 17:00
Last tastings at 16:30 | No advance booking required

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

The tasting room at Noble Hill is deliberately simple — no theatrics, just good wine and knowledgeable staff. One of the advantages of visiting a smaller estate is flexibility, and Noble Hill does this particularly well.

Wines I Recommend at Noble Hill

🍷 Cabernet Sauvignon (2020) – refined, balanced and food-friendly
🍸 Mourvèdre Rosé (2022) – fresh, dry and very drinkable
🍾 Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs (2019) – a standout MCC with real finesse

Tasting Prices

  • R80 – Estate Tasting (5 wines)
One tasting fee waived for every R400 spent
  • R120 – Reserve Tasting (Estate Reserves + MCC)
  • R219 – Dalewood cheese board with mushroom pâté & lavash crackers

As with many smaller Stellenbosch wineries, staff are often happy to pour a single sample if you’re interested in a specific bottle and plan to buy — don’t hesitate to ask.

Food & Restaurants

One of Noble Hill’s biggest draws is Cosecha, its Spanish-Mexican restaurant, which has developed a loyal following.

The food is bold, flavourful, and ideal for sharing — a nice contrast to more formal winery dining.

A bright sunny day, a table is laid for lunch with a parasol for shade.

💡 Insider Tip – Order the fish tacos 🌮. They’re genuinely some of the best I’ve had outside North America.

🗓️ Cosecha opening times: Wednesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:00 (Advance booking recommended)

Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons

A visit to Rupert & Rothschild is an undeniably upmarket Stellenbosch winery experience. With winemaking roots in France dating back to the 1800s, the estate was acquired in 1997 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild alongside the late Dr Anton Rupert, creating a partnership that blends French heritage with South African terroir.

The result is a refined, polished estate best known for producing some of the finest red wines in Stellenbosch, in a setting that feels calm, elegant, and quietly confident.

Rupert and Rothschild Wine Estate logo is mounted above the fireplace of this cosy room.
A table is laid for 6 people in front to a lush garden.

What Makes Rupert & Rothschild Special

This estate is defined by its Franco–South African identity. The focus is firmly on red wine production, with meticulous attention to detail both in the cellar and in the visitor experience.

Even if you’re not tasting, visitors are welcome to explore the manicured gardens and take in the serene atmosphere — something that sets Rupert & Rothschild apart from many reservation-only estates.

🕘 Wine tastings & sales:

  • Weekdays: 10:00 – 16:30
  • Weekends: 10:00 – 16:00

⚠️ Advance booking is required for tastings

The sun peaks out through the trees above this Stellenbosch wine estate.

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

Tastings at Rupert & Rothschild are structured slightly differently from most Stellenbosch wineries, with pricing per sample rather than set tasting flights. This suits visitors who want to focus on specific wines rather than work through a long list.

Wines I Recommend at Rupert & Rothschild

🍷 Baron Edmond – the estate’s flagship red and a benchmark Stellenbosch blend
🍸 Baroness Nadine Chardonnay – the sole South African white wine produced here
🍾 Barons de Rothschild Blanc de Blancs – refined French champagne with real finesse

Tasting Prices

  • R30-R35 – White wine (Baroness Nadine Chardonnay)
  • R35–R60 – Red wines (South African and French)
  • R90–R100 – French Champagnes

Advance booking is required for the tasting, which can be done here.

Food & Restaurants

The Rupert & Rothschild Restaurant is a destination in its own right, offering a fine dining experience that blends French culinary technique with South African ingredients.

🗓️ Restaurant opening days: Wednesday to Sunday
⚠️ Reservations several days in advance are strongly recommended

💡 Insider Tip – Vegetarian diners are well catered for, but it’s important to note dietary requirements when booking so the kitchen can adapt the menu accordingly.

Vrede en Lust Wine Estate

Vrede en Lust is widely recognised as a pioneer of sustainable wine farming in South Africa. In 2013, the estate installed over 1,000 solar panels, allowing it to operate independently from the national grid during daylight hours — a first for a South African wine farm at the time.

Solar panels top the roof of the winery. A path leads to the wine tasting room.

This commitment has reduced the estate’s carbon footprint by around 50%, setting a benchmark for environmentally responsible winemaking in the region.

🕘 Tasting room hours:
Monday to Sunday, 10:00 – 17:00
Last tastings poured at 16:30

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

The tasting offering at Vrede en Lust is straightforward and well organised, with options to suit both casual visitors and those looking to try flagship wines.

Wines I Recommend at Vrede en Lust

🍷 Lady J Syrah – elegant, well-structured and reliably excellent
🍸 Blanc Fumé – fresh and expressive, a great white option
🍾 Sarah Bubbly MCC – easy-drinking and very good value

💡 Insider Tip – South African rosé wines have improved enormously in recent years. The Jess Rosé is a great choice for casual summer drinking and worth adding to your shopping bag.

Tasting Prices

  • R90.00 Premium Tasting – 5 pre-selected wines
  • R120.00 Black Label Tasting – 5 pre-selected Flagship wines

For groups of fewer than 8 people, advance booking is not required.

A nice touch here is the option to pair your tasting with Dalewood cheeses or Swiss Lindt chocolates, which you don’t often find at other Stellenbosch wineries.

💡 Insider Tip – Tasting fees are waived with a purchase of R300 in Premium wines or R600 in Black Label wines. Always ask for the fee to be waived if you’re buying bottles.

Food & Restaurants

Vrede en Lust offers two solid dining options, depending on how relaxed you want your visit to be.

  • The Lust Bistro & Bakery is ideal for breakfast or a casual lunch
  • Savoye Restaurant offers a more refined experience and is open all week

⚠️ Reservations are essential for Savoye and should be made in advance

Boschendal Wine Estate

Boschendal is one of my absolute favourite Stellenbosch wineries — an estate where you can easily spend several relaxed hours. Founded in 1685, it’s one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms, combining deep history with a beautifully refined modern visitor experience.

An old Cape Dutch thatched house is fronted by a green lawn and an enormous tree.

Boschendal is also the estate I return to most often, thanks to its setting, food, and consistently excellent wines — particularly its MCC Brut Rosé, which remains one of the finest examples in Stellenbosch.

What Makes Boschendal Special

Boschendal is a resort-style wine estate offering far more than tastings alone. Beyond the vineyards, you’ll find multiple dining options, boutique accommodation, a farm shop, picnic lawns, and trails for walking, cycling, and horse riding.

It’s one of the most visited estates in the Stellenbosch Winelands — but thanks to its size and layout, it never feels cramped or rushed.

🕘 Wine tastings & sales:
Monday to Sunday, 10:00 – 17:30
⚠️ Last seating at 17:00

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

Wine tastings at Boschendal are currently offered at two distinct venues:

  • Farm Shop Tasting Room – turn left when entering the estate
    • Located in the beautifully restored historic house near the farm shop
  • Cellar Door Tasting Room – turn right when entering
    • My personal favourite, set beneath the oak trees with views of Cape Dutch architecture and the Simonsberg mountains

Both venues offer the same core tasting philosophy, with a strong emphasis on pairings and experience-led tastings.

The Deli Restaurant and Farm Shop offer more informal dining options. The Boschendal Farm Shop also has an incredible online store with delivery available across the Western Cape; a great option if self-catering in the area.

Wines I Recommend at Boschendal

🍷 Black Angus – rich, polished and consistently excellent
🍸 Suzanne – elegant, expressive and beautifully balanced
🍾 MCC Brut Rosé NV – one of the finest MCCs in Stellenbosch

💡 For me, MCC wines are where Stellenbosch truly shines, and Boschendal’s Brut Rosé is the bottle I always leave South Africa with.

Current Tasting Options

Cap Classique & Saldanha Bay Oyster Tasting – R350
Brut NV | Brut Rosé | Demi Sec | Grande Cuvée

Taste of Boschendal Charcuterie Pairing – R250
Brut NV | 1685 Sauvignon Blanc | Nicolas | Black Angus

1685 Range Chocolate Pairing – R250
Sauvignon Blanc | Chardonnay | Pinotage | Shiraz

Wine-only tastings available from R100–R200, depending on selection

⚠️ Boschendal is a cashless estate

💡 Insider Tip – If you’re choosing just one tasting here, the Cap Classique pairing is exceptional value and a real highlight.

Food & Restaurants

Boschendal’s dining offering has recently evolved, with the opening of Arum Restaurant, replacing the former Werf Restaurant.

Arum Restaurant is housed in the historic 1812 cellar, overlooking the organic vegetable gardens, and represents Boschendal’s most refined dining experience to date.

Led by Peter Tempelhoff, alongside Ashley Moss and Jennifer Hugé of the Fyn group, Arum follows a farm-to-firephilosophy, with ingredients sourced predominantly from the estate and dishes shaped by flame, smoke, and gentle char.

🕘 Opening hours:

  • Breakfast: 08:00 – 10:00 (daily)
  • Lunch: 12:00 – 14:30 (Wed–Sun)
  • Dinner: 18:00 – 20:30 (Wed–Sun)

⚠️ Important: Arum manages its reservations independently from Boschendal

Rainbow’s End Wine Estate

If you’re looking for a quiet, off-the-beaten-track Stellenbosch winery, Rainbow’s End is an absolute standout. Tucked away above Pniel, this is the estate I recommend when you want exceptional wines, dramatic mountain views, and a tasting experience that feels genuinely personal.

Several of my South African friends visited on my recommendation — and every single one came back raving about it.

Dramatic clouds swoop over the top of these Stellenbosch mountains at sunset.

What Makes Rainbow’s End Special

Rainbow’s End is a small, family-run estate with just 23 hectares under vine, focusing on quality over scale. The setting is spectacular, perched high above the valley with sweeping mountain views that change colour as the day fades.

Part of the magic is the journey itself. The final stretch off the main road feels like you’re heading somewhere secret — and when you arrive, it’s clear you’ve found one of Stellenbosch’s hidden gems.

While there’s no full restaurant on site, the estate prepares cheese and charcuterie platters to enjoy alongside your tasting, which suits the relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere perfectly.

🕘 Opening hours: Daily from 09:00 to 17:30
(Summer weekends often run later)

💡 Insider Tip – Pick up a fresh bunch of locally grown King Proteas for around R60. They’re beautiful, long-lasting, and make a great souvenir for your Airbnb.

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

The tasting experience at Rainbow’s End is one of the most memorable in Stellenbosch. The atmosphere is calm and unrushed, and the team genuinely takes time to understand what you enjoy.

On several visits, Fennel, who often hosts tastings, has remembered my preferences from previous trips — a small detail that says a lot about the care taken here.

🍷 Wines I Recommend at Rainbow’s End

🍷 Cabernet Franc (Limited Release) – elegant, structured and superb
🍸 Cabernet Franc Blanc de Noir – a refined rosé with real character
🍾 MCC – sourced from a boutique producer in Robertson and surprisingly excellent

Tasting Prices

  • R150 tasting fee for 5 wines, waived upon purchase of R450.
  • Premium and limited-release wines are usually available to taste — don’t be shy about asking

In summer, the tasting room often stays open until around 7pm at weekends, making this one of the best places in Stellenbosch for sunset wines. Watching the mountains shift colour with a glass in hand is one of my most memorable South African wine moments.

A wide room opens out onto a large terrace. People are sat tasting wine over looking the vineyards.
Overlooking the mountains as the sun goes down.

Tokara Wine Estate

Tokara is one of the most beautifully designed Stellenbosch wineries, set among rolling vineyards and olive groves on the slopes of the Simonsberg. A walk through the landscaped gardens — dotted with contemporary sculptures — is an experience in itself.

It’s easy to see why Tokara has remained a favourite with both locals and visitors for years: the setting is exceptional, the wines are consistently strong, and the estate offers something for everyone.

What Makes Tokara Special

Tokara combines architectural polish with approachability. The estate feels refined without being intimidating, making it just as suitable for a relaxed family lunch as it is for a more grown-up food-and-wine experience.

The tasting lounge is particularly impressive, with expansive views stretching over False Bay towards Table Mountain, adding real drama to the experience.

🕘 Tasting room hours:
Daily from 10:00 – 18:00
⚠️ Last tastings at 17:30

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

Tokara offers one of the most varied tasting portfolios in Stellenbosch, including premium wines and their XO Potstill Brandy. Tastings are charged by the glass, allowing you to tailor the experience to your interests rather than committing to a fixed flight.

Wines I Recommend at Tokara

🍷 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (2020) – polished, structured and age-worthy
🍸 Limited Release Chenin Blanc (2023) – focused, expressive and beautifully made
🍾 Cap Classique Blanc de Blancs (2017) – elegant MCC with real finesse

Tasting Prices

Tokara’s tasting prices are charged per glass and may vary by selection.

⚠️ Important: I’m currently unable to independently verify the latest tasting prices on Tokara’s official website. Prices listed previously were approximately:

  • Flagship wines – from R100
  • Reserve wines – from R150
  • Premium selections – from R140

💡 Tip – If pricing is important to your planning, it’s worth confirming current tasting options directly with the estate on arrival or before your visit.

Food & Restaurants

Tokara offers two excellent dining options, depending on the pace of your visit.

  • Tokara Restaurant delivers a more refined experience. Seasonal menus crafted by award-winning South African chef Carolize Coetzee are served in a dining room with sweeping views over Stellenbosch and False Bay.

⚠️ Reservations are essential.
🗓️ Open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner.

  • The Delicatessen is a relaxed, family-friendly bistro serving hearty, crowd-pleasing dishes. A children’s playground nearby makes this an easy stop if you’re visiting with kids.

⚠️ The Delicatessen is closed on Mondays.

Delaire Graff Estate

Just a stone’s throw from Tokara, Delaire Graff is one of the most luxurious and visually striking Stellenbosch wineries. Acquired in 2003 by Laurence Graff, founder of Graff Diamonds, the estate is unapologetically opulent — from the architecture and interiors to the art, gardens, and service.

This is a winery to visit when you want a high-end, polished experience that feels worlds away from rustic wine farming.

What Makes Delaire Graff Special

Delaire Graff blends fine wine, contemporary art, and luxury hospitality into a single experience. The estate’s manicured gardens are dotted with sculptures from Laurence Graff’s personal collection, showcasing works by some of South Africa’s leading contemporary artists.

The views alone are worth the visit, with sweeping panoramas across the Simonsberg mountains that change dramatically throughout the day.

🕘 Opening hours:
Daily from 10:00 – 17:30
⚠️ Last seating at 17:00
⚠️ The tasting room closes 30 minutes earlier on Sundays

💡 Insider Tip – Allow time to wander the botanical gardens and sculpture installations. Many visitors miss this, but it’s a core part of the Delaire Graff experience.

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

The tasting room at Delaire Graff is beautifully appointed, with floor-to-ceiling windows and uninterrupted mountain views. Despite the estate’s luxury feel, reservations for wine tastings are not required, making it an easy stop even on a busy day.

Tastings focus on wines from the Luxury and Premium ranges, with several clearly defined options.

Wines I Recommend at Delaire Graff

🍷 Botmaskop (2021) – the estate’s flagship red and a serious Stellenbosch blend
🍸 Coastal Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc (2023) – fresh, elegant and beautifully balanced
🍾 Sunrise Brut Cap Classique – refined MCC with fine mousse and great precision

Current Tasting Options

Based on the latest tasting menu:

  • Luxury Range Tasting
    R155 (3 wines) | R185 (4 wines)
  • Red Wine Selection
R340 (4 wines) – a curated selection of premium red wines
  • Icon Wine Tasting
    R360 (3 wines) | R440 (4 wines) | R500 (5 wines)
Featuring wines of exceptional quality that define the estate

⚠️ Prices and exact wine selections may vary slightly by vintage or availability.

Food & Restaurants

For something completely different, Delaire Graff is home to Hōseki Restaurant, a contemporary Japanese dining experience that ranks among the most distinctive restaurants in the Winelands.

Hōseki offers:

  • A refined sushi tasting menu, or
  • An eight-course Omakase experience,
with optional wine or sake pairings curated by the sommelier.

🕘 Opening hours: Lunch and dinner daily
⚠️ Reservations are essential

This is destination dining and well worth planning ahead for.

Glenelly Estate

Glenelly is one of the most elegant and understated Stellenbosch wineries, with deep French roots and a clear sense of purpose. Originally established in 1682 by French Huguenot François Villion, the estate entered its modern era in 2003 when it was acquired by May de Lencquesaing, of a renowned Bordeaux winemaking family.

Her vision was clear from the start: replace fruit orchards with vineyards and build a wine estate that supports the local economy and community, while producing wines of international quality.

Remarkably, Madame de Lencquesaing — now over 100 years old — still retains ownership of the estate, making Glenelly one of the most personally driven wineries in the region.

Tables and chairs on a terrace look out over this Stellenbosch vineyard.
2 red wine bottles, which belong to the Glenelly Winery.

What Makes Glenelly Special

Glenelly’s identity is shaped by its Franco–South African heritage. The wines reflect classical French structure, balanced with Stellenbosch fruit and climate, resulting in elegant, age-worthy bottles rather than bold, showy styles.

The estate itself is peaceful and refined, sitting on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg mountains, with a tasting room that feels calm even during peak seasons.

🕘 Tasting room opening times:

  • Tuesday & Wednesday: 10:00 – 18:00
  • Thursday – Saturday: 10:00 – 19:00
  • Sunday: 10:00 – 15:00
    ⚠️ Mondays: Closed

⚠️ Booking is highly recommended

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

The tasting room at Glenelly enjoys beautiful views across the Simonsberg slopes and offers a relaxed, personal experience. On my last visit in May 2024, we were the only guests — a rare and memorable treat in Stellenbosch.

Tastings focus on showcasing the estate’s core wines alongside their premium releases.

Wines I Recommend at Glenelly

🍷 Lady May (2019) – the estate’s flagship red and a benchmark Stellenbosch wine
• 🍸 Le Rosé de May – refined, dry and beautifully made

Tasting options

While Glenelly no longer publishes tasting prices clearly online, previous offerings included:

  • Glass Collection Tasting – 4 wines
  • Premium Tasting – 4 wines, including flagship selections

⚠️ Prices may vary by season and availability, so it’s best to confirm directly with the estate.

💡 Insider Tip – If available, choose the Premium Tasting. It often includes the Lady May 2018 and 2019 vintages, which are truly exceptional and worth seeking out.

🧀 Cheese & charcuterie platters are served daily between 10:00 and 15:00.

Food & Restaurants

The Vine Bistro is Glenelly’s on-site restaurant, offering classic French bistro cuisine with a modern twist, paired naturally with the estate’s wines.

The outdoor terrace is particularly lovely on warm days, and both lunch and dinner here make a relaxed yet refined addition to a winery visit.

⚠️ Advance reservations are recommended.

Green lawn opens out onto the vineyards of this winery with the Stellenbosch mountains looming in the background.

Uva Mira Mountain Vineyards

Perched high above Stellenbosch in what’s often referred to as the Hidden Valley, Uva Mira is one of the most dramatically located wineries in the region. Sitting at up to 620 metres above sea level on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain Range, the views stretch across False Bay and Table Bay, making the journey here as memorable as the wines themselves.

This is very much an off-the-beaten-track estate — and one that rewards the effort to get here with both scenery and exceptional quality.

What Makes Uva Mira Special

Uva Mira’s altitude, isolation, and proximity to the ocean create a unique microclimate, resulting in wines with freshness, precision, and elegance. It feels a world away from the busier Stellenbosch wine routes, which is exactly the appeal.

The estate has been owned since 2014 by Toby Venter, Chief Executive Officer of Porsche, Bentley, and Lamborghini in South Africa, and owner of the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. His background in luxury brands and attention to detail are evident throughout the estate, from the tasting experience to the wines themselves.

🕘 Opening hours:
Daily from 10:00 – 18:00

⚠️ Bookings are recommended
⚠️ Uber transport can be unreliable here, especially for return journeys

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

Wine tastings at Uva Mira are premium and experience-led, reflecting both the estate’s positioning and the quality of the wines. This is not a quick stop — it’s somewhere to slow down and savour the moment.

Wines I Recommend at Uva Mira

🍷 DW Syrah – elegant, expressive and beautifully structured
🍸 Sing a Wing Sauvignon Blanc – precise, mineral-driven and refined

Food & Restaurants

Uva Mira does not have a restaurant on site.

💡 Insider Tip – If you’re heading out this way and plan to eat before or after your tasting, The Deck at Hidden Valley Wines offers hearty, well-priced meals and pairs nicely with a visit to Uva Mira.

Hidden Valley Wines

Hidden Valley Wines is one of those Stellenbosch estates that quietly wins people over. I love visiting for The Terrace, which overlooks a tranquil lake and delivers some of the most relaxed, good-value food and wine in the area.

Located close to Uva Mira, Hidden Valley makes an excellent pairing if you want to balance a high-end tasting with something more informal and easygoing.

What Makes Hidden Valley Special

Hidden Valley is all about space, views, and approachability. The estate feels open and unhurried, with a scenic dam, indigenous gardens, and a calm atmosphere that suits couples, families, and groups equally well.

It’s also one of the better options in this part of Stellenbosch if you’re looking for a proper sit-down meal without fine-dining prices.

🕘 Opening hours:
Daily from 10:00 – 17:00
⚠️ Last wine tastings at 16:00

⚠️ Groups of 10 or more must book in advance

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

Wine tastings take place at The Terrace & Wine Tasting Centre, set on a scenic patio with sweeping views across the valley. Tastings here are relaxed and well-paced, with several pairing options available.

Wines I Recommend at Hidden Valley

🍷 Petit Verdot (2018) – bold, structured and excellent value
🍸 Viognier (2022) – aromatic, textured and very drinkable
🍾 Brut Rosé (2020) – fresh, easy-going MCC

Current Tasting & Pairing Options

These tastings can be enjoyed on their own or alongside lunch at The Terrace.

Food, Walks & Staying Over

The Terrace offers a refined yet relaxed dining experience, ideal for longer lunches. Their two-course menu includes a choice of mains and desserts, paired with a complimentary glass of wine — great value for the setting.

Beyond food and wine, Hidden Valley also offers:

  • A nature trail looping around the dam, showcasing indigenous gardens and birdlife
  • Occasional sightings of small buck and caracals, thanks to reintroduced native fauna
  • A secluded Bush Lodge, available for holiday rentals on the estate

The nature trail is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 and is an easy, scenic walk before or after your tasting.

Kanonkop Wine Estate

Kanonkop is one of the most important wine estates in Stellenbosch, particularly for lovers of structured, age-worthy red wines. With four generations of winemakers refining their craft here, the estate has become a global benchmark for both Pinotage and classic Stellenbosch reds.

This is not a flashy or experience-led winery — it’s a place to visit if you care about wine pedigree, consistency, and serious winemaking.

Red wine bottles lined up in a row at Kanonkop winery

What Makes Kanonkop Special

Kanonkop’s reputation is built on restraint, longevity, and an uncompromising focus on quality. The estate is especially revered for its role in elevating Pinotage, South Africa’s signature grape, to international acclaim.

The tasting experience here reflects that philosophy: simple, focused, and centred on the wines themselves rather than scenery or theatrics.

🕘 Tasting room opening times

  • Monday–Friday: 09:00 – 17:00
  • Saturday: 09:00 – 15:00
  • Public holidays: 10:00 – 16:00
⚠️ Closed Sundays, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day & Good Friday
    ⚠️ No booking required
⚠️ Groups preferably limited to 8 people

Wine Tastings & Standout Bottles

Tastings at Kanonkop are clearly structured and excellent value given the quality on offer. You can choose between a full range overview or a deeper dive into Pinotage, with optional premium add-ons.

Wines I Recommend at Kanonkop

🍷 Kanonkop Pinotage – a defining example of the grape
🍷 Paul Sauer – the estate’s iconic Bordeaux-style blend
🍷 Black Label Pinotage – powerful, refined, and highly sought after

Current Tasting Options

Planning a Route Around Stellenbosch Wineries

Stellenbosch is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. Rather than racing between estates, I recommend planning a circuit-style route and visiting two to four wineries in a day. This allows time for tastings, lunch, and simply enjoying the setting — without palate fatigue or rushing.

💡 Top Tips for the best experience:

  • 💡 – Choose wineries that sit close together and work logically along the same road or valley. Many of the estates in this guide naturally flow from one to the next.
  • 💡 – Book lunch or dinner in advance, especially at popular estates and during weekends or high season.
  • 💡 – You don’t always need a full tasting. If a single wine catches your eye, it’s often possible to request a small sample.
  • 💡 – Talk to the staff. The people working at Stellenbosch wineries are deeply knowledgeable and genuinely proud of what they do.

Stellenbosch Wineries: Frequently Asked Questions

How many wineries are there in Stellenbosch?

There are over 150 wineries in Stellenbosch, which can feel overwhelming for first-time visitors.

💡 Top Tip – Choose 2–4 wineries per day and plan them in driving order to keep things relaxed.

Which wines should I try in Stellenbosch?

Stellenbosch excels across several styles. Look out for:

  • White wines: Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, unoaked Chardonnay
  • Red wines: Pinotage, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz
  • Sparkling: Méthode Cap Classique (MCC)

Are Stellenbosch wines good?

Yes — Stellenbosch produces world-class wines, often at excellent value compared with prices in Europe or North America.

What is the difference between Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl?

Stellenbosch and Paarl sit closer to Cape Town and focus strongly on wine production. Franschhoek, around 20–25 minutes further, leans more toward food, luxury dining, and the wine tram experience.

How many days do you need to visit Stellenbosch?

I recommend 2–3 days in the Winelands, ideally splitting time between Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek.

When is the Best Time to Visit Stellenbosch Wineries?

South African seasons are the reverse of the northern hemisphere:

  • 🌼 Spring: September–November
  • 🌻 Summer: December–February
  • 🍁 Autumn: March–May
  • ❄️ Winter: June–August

Spring and early summer offer warm days and vibrant vineyards. Early autumn is also special, particularly if you catch the grape harvest.

⚠️ If safety is on your mind, I’ve covered this in detail in my Cape Town safety guide.

White tables and chairs are laid out beneath an enormous tree. Below the tree, people stand tasting wine.

The Wrap-Up: Are Stellenbosch Wineries Worth Visiting?

Absolutely. Stellenbosch offers one of the most rewarding wine experiences in the world — not just for the quality of the wines, but for the diversity of estates, landscapes, and atmospheres.

From historic farms and cutting-edge luxury estates to quiet, family-run vineyards with unforgettable views, there’s a depth here that rewards time and curiosity. Add in warm hospitality, exceptional food, and excellent value, and it’s easy to see why Stellenbosch remains the beating heart of South Africa’s wine country.

Plan thoughtfully, pace yourself, and you’ll leave with far more than just a few bottles — you’ll leave with memories worth returning for.
