5-Day Cape Town Itinerary (A Deeper Exploration)

If you have more than three days in Cape Town, you’re in for a treat! The next two days take you beyond the city, diving into the breathtaking Cape Winelands and uncovering more of Cape Town’s cultural gems.

Day 4 – 🍇 Cape Winelands

The Cape Winelands are a must-visit, with rolling vineyards, historic estates, and world-class wines. But it’s not just about wine—many farms offer stunning gardens, fine dining, and scenic picnics.

The Cape Winelands Region

For a seamless day, I recommend heading towards Paarl via the N1, taking the Klapmuts turn-off and heading into Winelands country. Below are my favourite estates, chosen for their uniqueness, history, and views. Pick a couple, decide where you’d like to have lunch (book in advance!), and enjoy a leisurely day in The Winelands.

🍇 Top Wine Estates to Visit

🚕 Getting Around the Winelands

  • Need a driver? If no one in your group wants to skip the wine, hire a private driver for a stress-free day. This 5 ⭐️ reviewed company is a great option and reasonably priced – click here to book.
  • Wine Tram: The Franschhoek Wine Tram lets you visit multiple estates easily, but I personally find it very touristy. A self-planned itinerary feels more authentic.

Start your day at Kirstenbosch, one of the world’s great botanical gardens. Nestled against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, the scenery here is simply breathtaking.

Essential Travel Tips for Cape Town

Best Time to Visit

Cape Town is a year-round destination, but if you’re after warm weather and blue skies, the best time to visit is January to April, when summer begins to transition into autumn.

⚠️ Remember, South Africa’s seasons are the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere:

🌸 Spring – September to November
🌻 Summer – December to February
🍁 Autumn/Fall – March to May
❄️ Winter – June to August

Getting Around

I recommend hiring a car for flexibility, but if you’re nervous about driving, ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt are widely available.

⚠️ Note: In South Africa, you drive on the left-hand side of the road.

Load Shedding

Load shedding (planned power cuts) can occur, though it’s been minimal since 2024. Download the EskomSePush app to stay updated on outages in your area.
