Where to Stay in Cape Town: 8 Best Areas

by Richard Hoskisson – March 2025

I have been visiting Cape Town annually since 2004 and have been fortunate to have stayed in many different areas of the city.

The Mother City is one of the most beautiful and diverse destinations in the world, but choosing where to stay in Cape Town can feel overwhelming. Each neighbourhood offers a completely different experience, and it’s important to pick the right one based on your travel style and priorities.

To make your choice easier, I’ve singled out the 8 best areas to stay in Cape Town based on over two decades of personal visits. This guide will help you make an informed decision based on your specific needs, budget, and travel style.

Table Mountain, framed by a bold yellow industrial structure, seen from the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Why Choosing the Right Area in Cape Town Matters

Cape Town is a city of contrasts, where neighbourhoods just a few hundred metres apart can feel worlds apart. Choosing the right area to stay in Cape Town is key to making the most of your visit. For example, the City Bowl offers stunning views of Table Mountain and a vibrant urban atmosphere, yet cross Kloof Nek Road, and you’ll find yourself in Camps Bay, where the ocean views and relaxed beachside setting create an entirely different experience.

A vintage orange car sits parked in front of brightly coloured houses in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town.

You should also consider transport when deciding where to stay. If you’re hiring a car, you may prefer to stay outside central Cape Town, where parking can be limited. On the other hand, if you plan to rely on Uber or walking, choosing a more central location will be more convenient.

Safety is another important factor. While Cape Town is a fantastic place to visit, security varies by area. Some neighbourhoods, like De Waterkant, have 24-hour security patrols, while larger detached homes in areas like Camps Bay may be more susceptible to break-ins. You can read more about safety in Cape Town here.

Questions to Ask Before Booking Your Stay

Choosing where to stay in Cape Town depends on your travel style, budget, and priorities. If you’re wondering how far your money will go, check out my guide on Is Cape Town Expensive? for a breakdown of costs.

Before booking, ask yourself these key questions to find the perfect area for your trip:

💰 What’s Your Budget?

Accommodation prices in Cape Town vary widely depending on the neighbourhood. The V&A Waterfront is one of the most expensive areas, offering luxury hotels with world-class amenities. However, just a short distance away, Green Point and De Waterkant provide stylish yet more affordable options, often within walking distance of the same attractions.

🗺️ What Attractions Matter Most to You?

If you want easy access to Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Robben Island, and many of the city’s top sights, staying in the Waterfront, Green Point, De Waterkant, or the City Bowl makes exploring effortless.
For a beachside escape, consider Sea Point, Clifton, or Camps Bay, where you can wake up to ocean views and enjoy Cape Town’s iconic coastline.

White sand beach of Clifton with bathers strolling along the shore, while white houses dot the landscape in the distance.

🚗 Will You Have a Car or Rely on Public Transport?

If you’re renting a car, parking in central Cape Town (like the City Bowl or De Waterkant) can be limited, whereas Camps Bay and Constantia offer more space. If you’re relying on Uber or public transport, choosing a well-connected neighbourhood like the City Bowl, Green Point, or The Waterfront will make getting around easier.

🌙 Do You Prefer Nightlife or Tranquillity?

For buzzing nightlife, bars, and a lively atmosphere, the City Bowl, Long Street, and De Waterkant are your best bet. If you prefer a peaceful retreatClifton, Camps Bay, and Constantia offer a more relaxed setting with stunning natural surroundings.

1. V&A Waterfront: Best for First-Time Visitors

Why Stay Here

If you’re visiting Cape Town for a short stay and want to pack in as many top attractions as possible, the V&A Waterfront offers convenient access to the city’s highlights. The area has a wide range of luxury hotels, plenty of restaurants, and an easy, walkable layout.

However, while it’s a safe and central choice, it’s also very touristy, and you won’t get a strong sense of local culture. If you prefer a more authentic Cape Town experience, you may want to look at nearby De Waterkant or Green Point instead.

Large letters spell out "Cape Town" in front of the vintage buildings at the V&A Waterfront.

The Vibe

Busy, lively, and very much designed for tourists. Expect a polished, commercial feel with international brands, street performers, and a mix of locals and visitors.

Top Attractions & Things to Do

  • 🛍️ V&A Waterfront – A massive shopping, dining, and entertainment complex surrounding the city’s historic working harbour.
  • ⛴️ Robben Island – The ferry to this iconic historical site departs from the Waterfront, making it the most convenient place to stay if it’s on your itinerary.
  • 🎨 Zeitz MOCAA – Africa’s premier contemporary art museum, housed in a repurposed grain silo. A must-visit for art lovers.
  • 🐠 Two Oceans Aquarium – Showcasing marine life from both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
  • 🚁 Boat, Bus & Helicopter Tours – Many sightseeing tours depart from the Waterfront, making it a convenient starting point for exploring the city and beyond.
  • 🍽️ Time Out Market – My personal favourite spot here! This vibrant food hall brings together some of Cape Town’s best chefs and local flavours, all under one roof.

Pros and Cons

✅ Centrally located with spectacular hotels and a safe, walkable environment.

✅ Easy access to top attractions, including Robben Island, Table Mountain, and plenty of tours and dining options.

❌ Very touristy—you won’t get much of an authentic local experience.

❌ Higher prices compared to nearby areas like Green Point or De Waterkant.

Areas to Approach with Caution

I have written extensively about safety in Cape Town, which you can read here. While Cape Town has many fantastic areas for visitors, some neighbourhoods experience high levels of violent crime and are best avoided by tourists. These include:

  • Cape Flats – A vast region where gang-related violence is a serious issue, particularly in areas such as Gugulethu and Philippi.
  • Mitchell’s Plain – High crime rates and ongoing gang activity make this area unsafe for visitors.
  • Khayelitsha – Some township tours offer cultural insights, but much of Khayelitsha faces significant safety concerns due to violent crime.
  • Nyanga – Frequently listed among the most dangerous areas in Cape Town, with high levels of violent crime.
  • Hanover Park – A hotspot for gang violence, making it a high-risk area for visitors.
  • Manenberg – Similar to Hanover Park, this area struggles with ongoing gang activity.
  • Ocean View – Despite its name, this area is known for crime and gang-related violence, posing risks for tourists.

💡 Top Tip – Stick to well-known tourist-friendly areas, especially if you’re unfamiliar with Cape Town. If you’re venturing further, always check local advice and opt for guided tours in less familiar neighbourhoods.
