Cape Town’s skyline is a masterpiece of nature, dominated by the iconic peaks of Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak, and Lion’s Head. An easier hike than Table Mountain, Lion’s Head offers unrivaled views across Cape Town, the Atlantic Seaboard and, of course, iconic views of Table Mountain itself.

Essential Info for Hiking Lion’s Head
📊 Hike Stats: Lion’s Head, Cape Town
☀️ Distance – 4.7 km (out and back)

Duration – 1.5 – 2.5 hours (depending on pace & fitness)
Difficulty Rating – Moderate – some steep sections and ladders/chains
Best Time – Sunrise or sunset; avoid midday heat
Starting Point – Lion’s Head Parking Lot, Signal Hill Road
Entry Fee – Free
💡 Top Tip: If you’re hiking for sunrise or sunset, bring a headlamp for better visibility on the way up/down.
When’s the Best Time to Go?
Sunrise and sunset hikes up Lion’s Head are not just the most popular times – they’re also the most rewarding. Having experienced both, I can tell you that the golden light during these hours creates spectacular photo opportunities of Cape Town. The trail is busier at these times, which adds an extra layer of safety through numbers.
⚠️ Avoid hiking at midday during summer months (November -February) as the path is exposed with little shade to shelter from the harsh African sun (temperatures can often exceed 30°C).

💡 Local Tip: If you’re hiking for sunrise, I recommend arriving at the parking lot 15 minutes earlier than you think you need to – it can get surprisingly busy, especially during peak season (December-January).
I’ve created a detailed comparison table below to help you choose the perfect time for your Lion’s Head adventure.

Route & Safety Tips
The Two Best Trails for Hiking Lion’s Head
There are two main routes I recommend for hiking Lion’s Head in Cape Town. One is easier, while the other is more challenging. Both start from the roadside parking area at Lion’s Head and are mostly similar apart from the section with the steepest ascent.
These most popular trails circles the mountain clockwise, offering ever-changing views of Cape Town, Camps Bay, the 12 Apostles, and the Atlantic Seaboard as you ascend.

The hike begins with a moderate incline on a wide, well-trodden path. After around one hour, you will find one ladder. Don’t panic, this is the main route and it is an easy ladder to climb. The more challenging part of the hike where the trail splits—is where you choose your route to the summit.

- Turn right (straight up) for Option 1 – The Chains Route (more adventurous).
- Turn left for Option 2 – The Spiral Route (easier and better for beginners).

⚠️ Important: The trail signposts do not refer to these routes by name. Instead, look out for the following:
- ‘Recommended Route’ → Option 2 – The Spiral Route
- ‘Lion’s Head Summit via Staples’ → Option 1 – The Chains Route
Option 1 – The Chains Route
This more adventurous route is steeper and more direct. It features chains and ladders to assist you in the final climb to the peak. If you enjoy a challenging scramble and don’t have a fear of heights, this is an exciting option.

Option 2 – The Spiral Route
This is the easier route and the best choice if you’re a beginner or have a fear of heights. It follows the signposted trail and avoids the chains and ladders. While there is still some light scrambling near the summit, it is less technical than the Chains Route.

💡 Top Tip: I recommend taking the Chains Route (Option 1) up for an adventurous ascent, and descending via the Spiral Route (Option 2) for a smoother return.
When I completed the hike, I opted for the Chains Route to the summit and descended via the Spiral Route—it was the perfect balance of challenge and ease!

🌖 Full Moon Hike
Cape Town under a clear full moon is a breathtaking sight, and hiking Lion’s Head at night is an unforgettable experience. Each month, the Lion’s Head full moon hike draws crowds eager to witness the city illuminated by moonlight.
Set off in the early evening to reach the summit at sunset, then watch as Cape Town transforms under the glow of the full moon—a truly magical moment.
💡 Top Tip: The night before or after the full moon offers the same experience with fewer crowds.

How to Stay Safe on the Trail (crime, weather, visibility)
⚠️ Security – Guard yourself against crime by hiking the trail of Lion’s Head at the busier times of day such as sunrise and sunset. Being surrounded by others on the trail makes you less susceptible to common crimes in Cape Town such as mugging. Check out my post on safety in Cape Town.
☀️ Weather – Sunrise and Sunset are really the best times of day to complete the hike. I would recommend checking weather forecasts in advance as the weather around Table Mountain can change very quickly, and wind gusts can be extremely strong. Check weather in advance. Wind Finder is my preferred service for accurately forecasting wind.
🌁 Visibility – Cape Town’s weather can change rapidly, and fog or mist can roll in unexpectedly, reducing visibility on the trail. This makes navigation tricky and increases the risk of losing your way, especially near the summit.

💡 Top Tip – If visibility drops significantly, wait for it to clear before continuing. If unsure, turn back rather than risk getting lost. Always carry a fully charged phone with offline maps for navigation.
Drinking Water & Facilities
There are vendors selling water at the start of the trails, however you will not find any other water stations or facilities once you start out on the trail. Make sure you pack a minimum of 1.5 liters of water per person.
Getting to Lion’s Head
There are a limited number of options to get to Lion’s Head; by private/hire car or using Uber/Bolt ride sharing.
🚗 – Arrive by Car and navigate to Lion’s Head Parking Lot. ⚠️ Ensure your car is locked and that there are no valuables on display inside the vehicle.
You can find detailed information on getting around Cape Town safely by clicking here.
Directions from Cape Town City Centre
From Cape Town city centre take Kloof Nek Road towards Table Mountain/Camps Bay. Take the Lion’s Head/Signal Hill turn off from Kloof Nek Road; parking and the start of the trails can be found a few hundred metres along the road.
Parking & Public Transport Options
There is plenty of parking available at Lion’s Head parking lot. However, if planning on completing the hike at sunset, it is advisable to arrive early as the parking can fill up quickly.
If arriving by Uber or Bolt, it is advisable to book a driver to collect you upon completion especially after sunset. It is not advisable to spend time hanging around on Signal Hill after dark.

Fun Facts About Lion’s Head
ℹ️ Why is it called Lion’s Head?
The peak was named by 17th-century Dutch settlers who thought its shape, along with Signal Hill (which they called Lion’s Rump), resembled a lion lying down.
🪖 A Historic Lookout Point
During the 18th and 19th centuries, both Lion’s Head and Signal Hill served as strategic lookout points for spotting approaching ships. The tradition of firing the noon-day cannon from Signal Hill still continues today!
⛏️ Mining on Lion’s Head
In the 1800s, small copper and quartz mines were established on the mountain. While they were never commercially successful, remnants of these early mining efforts can still be found.
🌳 The Battle to Restore Indigenous Flora
The stone pine trees seen on Lion’s Head today were planted in the 1900s, but they are not native to the area. Conservation efforts continue to restore the mountain’s original plant life, helping indigenous flora and fauna thrive again.
