The Best Coffee Shops in Cape Town Right Now

Best Cape Town coffee shops guide featuring trendy cafés and speciality coffee spots across the city.

If there is one thing I love about Cape Town besides the scenery, beaches and lifestyle, it’s the coffee culture. The city’s speciality coffee scene easily rivals places such as Melbourne or Dubai, with an endless mix of stylish cafés, independent roasteries and neighbourhood hangouts spread across the city.

What makes Cape Town coffee shops so special is that they are far more than somewhere to grab a quick flat white. They are part of the city’s lifestyle. From post-workout coffees along the Atlantic Seaboard to remote-working spots in De Waterkant and slow mornings in Camps Bay, coffee culture is woven into everyday life here.

After spending more than 20 years visiting Cape Town — and now spending several months of the year living here — I’ve discovered that the best coffee shops in Cape Town are often the ones with genuine atmosphere, great people-watching and a strong sense of place. In this guide, I’ve rounded up my favourite Cape Town coffee shops, from trendy speciality coffee spots to relaxed cafés by the beach.

Burnt Clubhouse – Best Trendy Coffee Spot in Green Point

One of Cape Town’s trendiest new coffee spots, Burnt Clubhouse perfectly captures the city’s growing blend of fitness, wellness and speciality coffee culture.

Located less than a minute from my house in Green Point, Burnt Clubhouse quickly became one of my favourite recent discoveries in Cape Town. Opened by South African activewear brand Burnt Studios, the space combines speciality coffee, wellness culture and remote working into one stylish community hub.

If you spend any time around the Atlantic Seaboard, you will quickly notice Burnt’s popularity amongst Cape Town’s fitness crowd. The Clubhouse attracts everyone from runners and gym-goers to digital nomads looking for a relaxed workspace, while the excellent Plato coffee keeps people lingering long after their morning workout.

Rosetta Roastery – Best Speciality Coffee in Cape Town

Located on Bree Street in the heart of Cape Town’s creative food scene, Rosetta Roastery serves some of the best coffee I’ve had anywhere in the city.

Although Cape Town has no shortage of trendy coffee shops, Rosetta Roastery still feels like one of the city’s true speciality coffee institutions. Located inside a characterful corner building on Bree Street, the café combines excellent coffee with a relaxed inner-city atmosphere.

What stood out to me most here was simply the quality of the coffee. I had one of the best flat whites I’ve tasted in Cape Town.

Inside, the space feels warm and understated, while the outdoor seating captures the energy of Bree Street. If you enjoy genuine speciality coffee, this is one Cape Town coffee shop I would prioritise visiting.

Platō Coffee – Best Camps Bay Coffee Spot

Located right in the heart of Camps Bay, Platō is one of my favourite spots for takeaway coffee before a beach walk or morning swim at the tidal pool.

Although Platō is now rapidly expanding across South Africa (and the UK), the Camps Bay branch still feels fresh and modern with one of the best locations on the Atlantic Seaboard. Opened in late 2025, it sits right in the centre of Camps Bay, steps away from the beach.

I love Platō for their consistently excellent flat whites, but if you want to try something more South African, order their Red Cappuccino made with rooibos tea.

The café itself can become loud and hectic during busy periods, especially on weekends, so I would not personally recommend it as a remote-working spot. Instead, this is the kind of place where you grab a takeaway coffee before walking along Camps Bay beach or heading to the nearby tidal pool.

Pauline’s – Best Coffee Shop Atmosphere

With its modern, calming interior, Table Mountain views and relaxed atmosphere, Pauline’s in Gardens is one of my favourite places in Cape Town. I often come here to slow down and spend a few hours working remotely.

Although Pauline’s now has several locations across Cape Town, including Sea Point and Green Point, the Gardens branch is still my favourite. Located within one of the neighbourhood’s newer developments, it has helped bring a fresh energy to this corner of the city while still feeling calm and welcoming.

The coffee here is excellent — one of the best café lattes I’ve had in Cape Town recently. But what really makes Pauline’s stand out is the atmosphere. With plenty of natural light and a large outdoor seating area, enjoying Table Mountain views, expect a quieter pace than many Atlantic Seaboard cafés, it is the kind of place you can comfortably settle in for a few hours with good coffee and a laptop.

The food is also genuinely good rather than just an afterthought. The Burrata & Beetroot bowl is worth ordering if you are hungry, while the turmeric latte makes a nice alternative if you are trying to avoid a second coffee.

Sentinel Ocean Alliance – Best Beach Coffee Shop

Located directly on Hout Bay Beach, Sentinel Ocean Alliance is one of my favourite coffee stops when driving or cycling through Chapman’s Peak or on the way to explore the Cape Peninsula.

Although Sentinel Ocean Alliance is technically more of a community organisation than a traditional coffee shop, its beachfront café is one of the best places you can get coffee right on the beach. With views right across the bay, it is the perfect place to pause before continuing along Chapman’s Peak Drive towards Cape Point.

The coffee itself is solid rather than ultra-speciality, but that almost feels secondary to the setting. Sitting on the beach with an iced latte while watching life unfold on Hout Bay Beach is exactly the kind of slower Cape Town moment that I love.

What makes the place even more special is the organisation behind it. Sentinel Ocean Alliance uses ocean education and leadership programmes to support young people from underserved coastal communities, helping create stronger connections and awareness between local communities and the ocean around them.

Heaven Coffee – Most Unique Coffee Shop Location

Set inside a historic church just off Greenmarket Square, Heaven Coffee offers one of the most peaceful coffee experiences anywhere in Cape Town.

Located inside the historic Central Methodist Mission Church, Heaven Coffee Shop feels completely different to anywhere else featured in this guide. While Cape Town’s coffee scene is often associated with trendy interiors and busy cafés, this space offers something much quieter and more reflective.

What I personally love most about Heaven Coffee is the sense of calm. Sitting inside the church between services with a coffee feels strangely peaceful despite being only steps away from the energy of Greenmarket Square.

The coffee itself is excellent too, using beans sourced from Origin Coffee Roasting and Deluxe Coffeeworks. Combined with the genuinely warm service, it is one of those places that you will remember long after you have left Cape Town.

It also pairs perfectly with exploring Greenmarket Square or wandering through the nearby Company’s Garden afterwards.

The Wrap-Up: Are Cape Town Coffee Shops Worth Exploring?

One of the things I love most about Cape Town is how coffee culture becomes part of the city’s lifestyle. Whether it’s grabbing a flat white before a beach walk in Camps Bay, working remotely beneath Table Mountain or stopping for an iced latte along Chapman’s Peak Drive, each coffee shop I recommend offers a completely different side of the city.

Many of these coffee shops are located around the Atlantic Seaboard and CBD, which are some of the best areas to stay in Cape Town.

What makes the best Cape Town coffee shops stand out is not just the quality of the coffee itself, but the atmosphere, scenery and sense of community around them. Hopefully this guide helps you discover a few new favourites of your own during your time in Cape Town.
